The New York Rangers fired Peter Laviolette after a disappointing regular season in 2024-2025. There are rumors that there are multiple coaches available and linked to the Rangers, including former Head Coach John Tortorella. Could he rejoin the Rangers, in another role?
It looks like a reunion could be in order for John Tortorella and the New York Rangers.
But this time, instead of being the Head Coach, a position he held in New York from 2009 to 2013, it'll be an ancillary role.
This in accordance with the fact that Mike Sullivan, former Penguins head coach, seems to be the #1 candidate for the New York Rangers coaching job at the moment.
The two aren't unfamiliar with each other, given that Sullivan served under Tortorella from 2009 to 2013 in New York as an assistant.
During this year's inaugural Four Nations Face-Off, Tortorella joined Team USA in an assistant role under Mike Sullivan.
This remains pure speculation by Remy Mastey of The Hockey News. But given their relationship together, it wouldn't be an unreasonable idea.
They have history in more than just one avenue of the hockey world, from New York to international competition.
While Tortorella has no shortage of ties to New York, as he knows both James Dolan and GM Chris Drury.
So, it's difficult to see where Tortorella lands after his latest debacle in Philadelphia. An assistant coaching role in New York under Sullivan could help pad his resume for the long road ahead.
Or he could go back to ESPN?
Either way, it'll be interesting to see how this storyline progresses.
